Founded in 1968 as a nonprofit ministry of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers began on 75 acres near Sanibel Island donated by Berry C. Williams. It grew from a single-island community into a 700+ acre, resort-style Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) serving over 2,400 residents.
Key Historical Milestones:
Founding (1968): Established by The C&MA to provide a faith-based, comprehensive senior living environment.
Initial Growth (1970s-1980s): The original 75-acre island was developed, offering garden courts, midrises, and atrium buildings.
Expansion (1990s-Present): Completed build-out of the island in 1995 and significantly expanded by acquiring 750 additional acres, adding neighborhoods like The Woodlands, Eagles Preserve, and The Estuary.
Continued Development: Known as the largest single-site CCRC in the country, the community continues to expand, such as the addition of the Vista Cay mid-rise.
Modern Era: Offers comprehensive care (independent, assisted, skilled nursing), with amenities including a championship golf course and deep- water boating access.
Throughout its history, Shell Point has remained a non-profit entity dedicated to providing a full spectrum of care and services for seniors in Southwest Florida.
